Study First, Light Second: 5 Product Photography Principles That Actually Change Your Results
I have a lightbox sitting on my kitchen counter right now. Not because I ran out of studio space, but because the fastest way I know to test a lighting idea is to grab whatever I’m about to eat, drop it inside, and see what happens. Occupational hazard. The point is, I am constantly chasing the gap between a product photo that reads as “fine” and one that makes someone stop scrolling and actually buy. That gap is usually not about gear. It’s about understanding the principles underneath the technique.
That’s why I keep coming back to Kyle Taylor’s work at Visual Education. His approach to product lighting is methodical in a way that genuinely teaches you to see differently, not just copy a setup. The tutorial covers five core principles for stronger product photography. I’m walking through the first two in depth because they’re foundational and, honestly, the ones most people skip straight past on their way to fussing with camera settings.
Step 1: Study the Product Before You Touch Your Camera

Most photographers treat pre-shoot time as setup time. Move the light stand, adjust the backdrop, check the exposure. Kyle argues convincingly that the most valuable pre-shoot minutes are spent with the product itself, not the equipment. Before you fire a single frame, examine the object like you’re seeing it for the first time.
What you’re looking for: the brand marks that need to stay legible, the surface textures that will behave differently under light, the angles that reveal the product’s best geometry. On a pair of headphones, that might mean noticing that the ear cushions are leather while the headband is matte plastic, and the logo has a metallic finish. Each of those materials reflects light in a completely different way. If you walk into a shoot without knowing that, you’ll spend hours troubleshooting problems you didn’t anticipate. Build a short mental map of every distinct surface on the product, what it’s made of, and what it’s supposed to communicate. That map becomes your lighting plan.
I do this with a notes app on my phone. I photograph the product from every angle before the shoot, then annotate: “semi-gloss here,” “brushed metal, will mirror the light source,” “matte fabric, needs directional light to show texture.” Five minutes of this saves an hour of reshooting.
Step 2: Use Gradient Lighting Instead of a Standard Softbox

This is the tip that re-wired how I think about studio lighting for products, and it’s one of those concepts that sounds technical until you hear the explanation, and then you can’t unsee it.
A standard softbox produces what Kyle calls homogeneous light. The entire surface glows evenly, which sounds like a good thing. For portraits, it often is. For products, especially anything with a gloss or semi-gloss finish, it creates a problem: image-forming reflections. Glossy surfaces act like mirrors. They don’t just reflect light in a diffuse way, they reflect the actual shape of your light source. Point a standard rectangular softbox at a bottle, a watch, a pair of headphones, and you’ll see a hard-edged white rectangle sitting right on the surface of your product. It looks flat, commercial in the worst sense, and frankly cheap.
Gradient lighting solves this by replacing that uniform panel with a light source that transitions from bright to dark. There are two main versions: a radial gradient, which has a hot center that fades outward in all directions, and a linear gradient, where brightness runs across the panel in one direction. Both can be achieved by placing a softbox behind a diffusion panel and positioning it so that the light doesn’t hit the diffuser evenly. The reflection that appears in your product surface is no longer a blocky white square. It becomes a smooth, elegant highlight that suggests dimension and quality. The product looks more expensive because the reflection itself looks intentional.
The practical way to build this: use a large piece of white acrylic or a ripstop nylon diffusion panel as your light face, and position your actual light source behind it, slightly off-center or further from one edge. The distance between the light and the diffusion material controls how hard or soft the gradient falls. More distance equals a softer, more gradual fade. Test it by shooting a dark, reflective object, something like a black phone case or a shiny bottle, and watch how the highlight on the surface changes as you move the back light.
Step 3: Match Your Lighting Approach to Each Surface Type

Once you’ve studied the product and understand gradient lighting, the next step is connecting those two pieces. Different materials on the same product need different light qualities, and sometimes that means compromising or prioritizing.
Matte surfaces want directional light with some angle to them, because that’s what reveals texture. Flat, frontal light on matte fabric makes it look like a painted surface. Slightly raking the light, even by 20 to 30 degrees, will pull out the weave or grain. Metallic and glossy surfaces want soft, gradual light sources positioned to create intentional highlights. Leather sits somewhere in between: it has a slight sheen but also texture, so you’re balancing both. When a single product has all three material types, your job is to find the light position that handles each one acceptably, then use reflectors or small flags to fine-tune problem areas individually.
What I’d Add From My Own Experience
The thing Kyle’s tutorial doesn’t have time to cover in depth is the cost of skipping Step 1. I learned this helping my mom photograph her handmade jewelry. She had been shooting with her phone, decent light, fine composition, but the photos weren’t moving product. When I actually sat down and studied each piece, I noticed the stones had inclusions that caught light at specific angles. The settings had tiny texture details that disappeared in flat lighting. Rebuilding the shoot around those specific features, not just “good product photography in general,” was what made the difference. Her sales response changed within weeks.
Product photography isn’t really about the product in the abstract. It’s about finding the exact qualities that make that specific object worth owning, and then engineering the light to communicate those qualities as clearly as possible. That process starts before the camera is ever involved.
The single most important takeaway from this tutorial is that great product photography is an analytical process, not an intuitive one. You study the object, you engineer the light to match its surfaces, and you make deliberate decisions rather than hoping a nice softbox and a clean background will do the work. That discipline is what separates product images that convert from ones that just document.
