Why Jewelry Photography Requires a Different Approach
Jewelry presents a unique challenge: it’s small, reflective, and demands absolute clarity of detail while maintaining visual appeal. A blurry facet on a diamond or a fingerprint on a gold band can tank a sale. Unlike photographing larger products, jewelry requires you to think simultaneously about magnification, light control, and micro-details.
The stakes also extend to color accuracy. A diamond’s color grade or a gemstone’s saturation can literally be worth thousands of dollars. Your camera and lighting setup must render these accurately—no excuses.
Camera Settings for Jewelry Work
I shoot jewelry on a macro lens (typically 90-105mm with 1:1 magnification) tethered to a full-frame camera. My baseline settings are:
- Aperture: f/8 to f/11. This gives you enough depth of field to keep the entire piece in focus without being so stopped-down that diffraction softens critical details.
- Shutter speed: 1/125 to 1/250. You want fast enough to eliminate any ambient light contamination.
