How to Light Shiny Metal in a Still Life (Without Blowing Out Every Highlight)

Shiny metal is the subject that humbles photographers fast. I’ve seen sellers list gorgeous handmade silverware, award trophies, and jewelry dishes online, and every single photo looks like a chrome blob floating in a void. The highlights blow out, the shadows disappear, and the object loses all sense of form. It reads flat and cheap, even when the product is anything but. This is the exact problem I keep running into with clients who sell metallic goods, and it took me a while to understand that lighting metal isn’t just about exposure control. It’s about sculpting reflections deliberately, one card at a time.

What makes this tutorial genuinely useful is the “remove one card at a time” reveal structure. Morgan builds the final shot and then strips it back to show you what each modifier was actually doing. That reverse engineering is how I teach lighting too, and it’s the fastest way to train your eye.


Step 1: Build Your Set for Depth First

Morgan uses black slate from a home improvement store as his tabletop surface. It adds texture without competing with the subject, and the dark tone helps control how much light bounces back up into the scene. The backdrop sits far behind the table, separated enough to fall slightly out of focus and create a sense of depth. That distance also gives you independent control over the background light without it spilling onto your product.

If you’re shooting in a tight space, push your backdrop as far back as your room allows and use a longer focal length to compress the scene. The separation matters more than the size of your setup.

Step 2: Start With One Overhead Softbox

This is the workhorse of the shot. It gives the pears their color and roundness, and it establishes the primary reflection across the silver bowl. Overhead light on a still life reads as natural and elegant, similar to north window light or an overcast sky. It wraps around curved surfaces without creating harsh shadows directly to the side.

The key here is to resist the urge to add a second main light before you’ve fully studied what the first one is doing. Sit with just that overhead source and identify exactly what’s missing. That discipline is what makes everything that comes after it intentional rather than reactive.

Step 3: Add a Background Light to Separate the Subject

Morgan adds a dedicated background light to pull the backdrop slightly brighter than the subject’s shadow areas. This separation is what tells the viewer’s eye that there’s space behind the bowl. Without it, the still life looks like it’s pasted onto a flat surface.

Keep the background exposure lower than your main subject. You want it lighter than the shadows, not brighter than the midtones. A subtle gradient or modeled texture in the backdrop, rather than a flat white, gives the image a richer, more editorial feel.

Step 4: Open Up the Shadow Side With a Bounce and a Flag

Immediately after, he adds a flag (a dark card or reflector angled to cut light) to keep that fill from spilling too much onto the surface directly beside it. Fill light that’s uncontrolled flattens the whole image.

This is a move I use constantly: bounce first, then flag. Think of it as adding and subtracting in the same step. A V-flat (two white foamcore panels taped together at a hinge) works well here because you can control the angle of both sides independently.

Step 5: Introduce a V-Flat to Open the Salt and Pepper Shaker

Morgan brings in a V-flat on the opposite side from the key light. It catches spill from the softbox and redirects it as a broad, soft fill source, opening up the side of the shakers and reducing the harshness of the shadow falloff on the pears nearby.

A V-flat is one of the most cost-effective tools in a still life kit. Two sheets of foam board and a strip of gaffer tape. Position it at roughly 45 degrees to the subject and adjust until you see the shadows lift without the highlights merging.

Step 6: Control the Silver Bowl With an Eyebrow, a Net, and Black Cards

Morgan clips what he calls an “eyebrow” (a small strip of reflective material) to the back edge of the overhead softbox, angling it so it throws a concentrated highlight directly into the silver bowl. The effect is immediate and dramatic: the bowl suddenly reads as genuinely metallic and three-dimensional.

The problem is it’s too much. The bowl goes too bright and loses its tonal variation, so he introduces a double net (two layers of diffusion material) between the eyebrow and the bowl to bring the intensity down. Then, critically, he places a small piece of black card near the bowl to cast a partial dark reflection into the silver. That dark-to-light gradient inside the bowl is what makes the metal look real. Shiny metal doesn’t just need highlights. It needs contrast within its reflections.

Step 7: Address Each Metal Object Individually

Morgan shoots multiple frames, one with the card in the shot, one without, and plans to composite the best version of each element into the final image in post. This is standard practice for complex still life work. You rarely get every object looking perfect in a single frame when there are multiple reflective surfaces involved.

Don’t be afraid of compositing. It isn’t cheating. It’s how you maintain control over each element without one lighting decision ruining another.


What I’d Do Differently for E-Commerce Work

For a styled editorial shot like this, Morgan’s layered approach is exactly right. But if you’re shooting products for an e-commerce listing rather than a campaign image, you usually don’t have time to card every object individually across 50 SKUs. My workaround is to use a large white acrylic sheet above the product instead of a softbox with an eyebrow. It gives you a broad, even reflection across the entire metallic surface in one move, which you can then modify with black cards to add contrast. It’s faster and more consistent across a run of similar products. Save the eyebrow and net technique for hero images where the extra control is worth the setup time.

The deepest insight from this tutorial is one that applies to every shiny product you’ll ever photograph: reflective surfaces show you the room, not the light. You’re not lighting the object. You’re designing what the object sees. Every card, flag, and bounce is a decision about what reflection you want to appear in that surface. Once that clicks, metal stops being intimidating and starts being one of the most controllable materials you can shoot.
