The Mistake I See in Almost Every Beginner’s Flat Lay

A few years ago, my mom was selling handmade earrings on Etsy. The pieces were genuinely beautiful - hammered gold, delicate wire work, the kind of thing that should have been flying off the digital shelves. Her photos were shot on an iPhone in natural window light, and they looked exactly like that: snapshots. The earrings sat flat on a piece of notebook paper. The light was uneven. The metal looked dull.

She asked me to help, and the first thing I changed wasn’t her camera or her background. It was the surface underneath the products. Within three months, her sales had tripled.

That experience taught me something I now tell every small business owner I work with: your shooting surface is not just a background. It is an active participant in your lighting setup.

What Reflective Surfaces Are Actually Doing to Your Light

When light hits a matte surface, it scatters in every direction. This is called diffuse reflection, and it’s why a wooden table looks flat and even - there’s no directionality to the bounce. A reflective surface, on the other hand, bounces light back toward your subject in a much more controlled way. This is called specular reflection, and it’s what creates that subtle glow you see beneath perfume bottles or jewelry in high-end catalog shots.

The surface underneath your product isn’t passive. It’s redirecting whatever light source you have, and depending on the material, it’s adding color, contrast, and depth. A white acrylic sheet will bounce clean, neutral light upward. A black acrylic sheet will create a mirror-like reflection that adds drama and makes your product appear to float. A rose gold metallic paper does something in between: it warms the light and adds a lifestyle feel.

This is physics, not magic. Once you understand what each material is doing to your photons, you stop guessing and start making intentional choices.

The Surfaces I Actually Use (With Prices)

I keep a small collection of surfaces in my studio - and, yes, also in my kitchen, where I test setups between shoots. Here’s what I reach for most:

White acrylic sheet (24x24 inches, around $18 at most hardware or plastics supply stores): This is my workhorse for skincare, food supplements, and candles. It creates a clean, seamless look and bounces light evenly. The reflection is soft enough that it reads as “premium” without looking overly stylized.

Black acrylic sheet (same dimensions, same price range): I use this for anything metallic or dark-toned - watches, electronics, dark glass bottles. The reflection beneath the product doubles it visually and creates a sense of depth that makes the image feel three-dimensional.

Glossy white foam board (around $4 at any craft store): This is my recommendation for beginners or anyone shooting on a budget. It’s not as perfectly reflective as acrylic, but it gives a similar effect and is forgiving. It also doubles as a bounce card.

Vinyl photography backdrops with a marble or terrazzo print: These run $15-30 on Amazon and photograph convincingly. They don’t give you a true reflection, but they add texture and visual interest without competing with the product.

Actual marble tiles from a home improvement store ($2-6 per tile): For smaller products like jewelry, this is unbeatable. Real marble reflects light in a way that no printed vinyl can fully replicate, and the natural variation gives every shot a slightly different feel.

Setting Up a Reflective Surface Shot Without Blowing Out the Image

The biggest mistake people make when they first shoot on reflective surfaces is overexposure. The surface bounces so much light back at the lens that the camera meters incorrectly, and you lose detail in the product.

Here’s how I correct for that. I shoot in manual mode, start with an aperture of f/8 (for enough depth of field to keep the whole product sharp), ISO 100, and a shutter speed around 1/125 if I’m using a strobe, or 1/60 with continuous LED panels. I then use my histogram to evaluate exposure rather than the camera’s LCD, which often lies to you.

For the light position, I angle my key light at about 45 degrees to the side and slightly above the product. This creates a directional reflection in the surface below the product - a small, bright highlight line - that defines the product’s edge and gives the image structure. If that highlight is too harsh, I add a piece of white foam board on the opposite side to fill the shadows.

I shoot tethered to Lightroom Classic when I can, so I see the actual file immediately rather than guessing on a 3-inch screen. The reflective surface will look very different on a calibrated monitor than it does on your camera’s display.

When a Reflective Surface Is the Wrong Choice

I photographed 200 products in a single day for a startup launch - skincare, supplements, and a line of printed tote bags. The skincare looked incredible on white acrylic. The tote bags looked like a mess. The texture of the fabric read as noise against the reflective surface, and the reflection just muddied the image.

Matte or semi-matte products with a lot of surface texture, light-colored fabrics, and products with intricate printed details often photograph better on a flat, non-reflective surface where the camera sees only the product and nothing else. Reflective surfaces are powerful, but they work by making themselves visible in the frame. If you don’t want the surface to be part of the story, don’t use one.

The single most important thing I can tell you about reflective surfaces is this: treat them as a light modifier, not a decoration. Choose them the way you’d choose a softbox or a reflector - based on what they do to the light, not how they look on your mood board.
