Every product photographer hits a wall eventually. Mine came during a shoot for a skincare client whose bottles were roughly the size of my thumb. I had the lighting knowledge for large setups, but miniaturizing everything, the angles, the reflections, the margins for error, felt like learning a different language. What strikes me most watching it is how the same underlying logic, controlling light and managing reflections, adapts to each scenario rather than starting from scratch every time. Here is my breakdown of what is actually being demonstrated, with the practical details you need to apply it yourself.

Step 1: Overcome Ambient Light in Automotive Photography

The technique demonstrated here is using a fast shutter speed, 1/500th of a second specifically, to effectively neutralize ambient daylight. When you cut out the sun as your primary light source this way, you reclaim full control over how the car is lit using your own strobes or continuous lights. The ambient becomes a non-factor rather than something you are fighting.

This matters because ambient daylight is unpredictable. It shifts color temperature throughout the day and creates specular highlights on curved metal panels that you cannot reposition. By underexposing the ambient at 1/500th and then building your exposure back up with controlled artificial light, you are essentially creating a studio environment in an open parking lot.

Step 2: Use Color Cards to Correct Liquid Photography

Step 3: Build Your Exposure One Light at a Time

Both choices are doing specific jobs. The 80mm focal length on medium format gives flattering compression without the distortion that wider lenses introduce on small objects, which matters when a millimeter of barrel distortion can make a cylindrical product look misshapen. The honeycomb grid narrows the beam of the strobe so light hits the product with precision and does not spill onto the background or adjacent surfaces.

The framing detail is equally deliberate: a highlight line is being placed across the front surface of the lipstick, including the blue plastic casing. That line is what gives the product its three-dimensional shape and premium feel. Without it, a lipstick tube reads as flat and cheap. With it, the material looks solid and intentional. A narrow grid is how you control that line without it bleeding into the background.

Step 5: Execute the Pack Shot with a Single Softbox

The tutorial shows a straightforward approach using one main softbox as the primary source. A large softbox placed overhead or at a 45-degree angle gives you even, diffused light that wraps around the product without creating harsh shadows. The key word in the tutorial description is “quickly and effectively,” and that is the whole philosophy of a good pack shot workflow.

You do not need complex lighting for most pack shots. What you need is a softbox large enough relative to your product, consistent placement across a full session, and a background that stays pure white in post with minimal masking. Nail those three things and you can shoot a high volume of SKUs without the setup eating your day.

Step 6: Adapt Your Technique for Miniature Products

Reflections that you could ignore on a medium-sized bottle become dominant and distracting on a tiny object. At small scale, you often need to introduce diffusion material closer to the product, sometimes just a few centimeters away, and use smaller modifiers so your light-to-subject ratio stays manageable. Macro lenses or extension tubes become relevant. And you will find yourself using strips of white card to bounce light into spaces that no strobe can physically aim at.

What I Would Add From My Own Shoots

The sequential lighting method from Step 3 is the one I wish someone had drilled into me earlier. I spent two years building lighting setups simultaneously and wondering why my troubleshooting took so long. Now I do something similar when I am shooting with my lightbox at home: I start with the lid open and no diffusion to see the raw light shape, then add diffusion, then introduce any fill cards. Each addition is a single variable. It sounds slow, but it actually cuts total setup time because you are not undoing mistakes.

For e-commerce specifically, I would pair the pack shot softbox technique with a trigger-based tethering setup so you can review full-resolution files on a monitor between shots. What looks acceptable on a camera LCD will sometimes reveal light inconsistencies across a 20-product session that are expensive to fix in post.

The single most important idea running through this entire trailer is that every product category has a version of the same problem: controlling what light does when it hits a surface. The tools and scales change, but the thinking stays consistent. That is the mindset worth developing.
